#1 Need help starting my engine...
Dpowered Posted on: 2012/12/8 2:32
I swapped a A14 motor to my 1975 Datsun B210 but it doesn't want to start, I don't know if its the firing order from the distributor or the firing order from the block that I'm getting wrong. Also there is a little window on the carburetor and I heard that it supposed to be filled of gas to the half ways mark but it is not, I tried many things but still no luck. It's my first carburetor car so please pardon my ignorance, any suggestions will help.
Thanks,

If you are on Maui I can help tomorrow.

carb fuel level is checked after you get it running

Check the firing order is correct then put a small cap of petrol down the carby and see if it starts. Also check you're getting spark, turn it over with the coil high tensionlead off and see if it sparks. Then you can start narrowing down where the problem is.

I live in Salinas CA, and as for the firing order I searched here and all I could find was a picture of distributor with the firing order but as for the firing order on the head I don't know if it starts from the fire wall to the radiator or the other way around, I also checked the spark and it seems to be fine. The thing is that when I put gas down the carburetor and I crank it the cars wants to start but as soon as it finishes that fuel it stops. Checked the fuel pump as well and it seems to work properly, don't know what else to check.

Cyl 1 is at the front of the car 4 at the rear of the head.

Yes, for all inline engines #1 is at the front of the car.

You should get a repair manual, it has photos/diagrams for everything. Only $20 at your local auto parts store or amazon.com or as little as $5-10 on eBay. If your budget is tight, the local library will have a repair manual.

Firing order is 1-3-4-2, with as mentioned the cylinder in front being #1. Look on the side of the distributor cap there may be a raised vertical line about an inch long, this will indicate #1 cylinder. Further the plug lead next to the vacuum advance mechanism should be #3 and the one next to the ignitor unit being #4. The distributor rotor will spin counter clockwise............just spin crank pulley till the tdc marks line up and then see where the rotor is.

As for the carb, these are easy. Pull the fuel line and make sure fuel is going to the carb. After that you can shoot a little carb cleaner in the float bowl (where the fuel line attaches). See if the fuel level comes up, if not the float needle could be stuck.

Also, this is not the best method but you can squirt carb cleaner down the throat and see if it fires.
