#1 Malala racing in Adelaide
Jesse Posted on: 2002/5/30 6:05
I mentioned a little while ago a race day at malala.

Next week i start my apprenticeship with the MTA. Turns out the MTA have a close relationship with Malala raceway, and often send apprentices down there as pit crews for racers. If all goes well, the datto raceday should turn out even better than expected!

Just keeping ya up to date...

i seem to be having a lot of luck getting "rare" bits for the 1200. it continued yesterday as i went to wreckers in melb that has $75 all you can carry every day and i walked out with a 4.875:1 H165 diff center out of vanette, brand new radiator from some alfa with thermo (its real short but fat with tanks on either end, should be perfect) and i took the dash from the alfa (gonna try and use it to make own dash) and my brother got a couple of 32/36 downdraught webbers all for $75
the diff centers going to a bloke down here that does sprung loaded lockers for $250 which act kinda like a LSD, allowing outside wheel to spin faster while turning but locking up when required.
yeah so im pretty happy sept for the fact that i got exams for uni starting thursday and havent started study yet

sounds liked you scored wickedly dude...

tell me more about these spring (sprung?) loaded lockers? My uncle owns a diff shop, and i been meaning to go and talk to him for the past year now, but keep getting sidetracked.

How do they manage to lock still? Sounds like the exact thing i am looking for!

I suspect that they wouldnt last too long though, espcially the way i drive...hehe

unfortunately, my brother investigated this diff for his mk1 escort and he's the one that knows the theory behind it (ill have a chat next time i see him and fing out). but basically its a almost "home-made" copy of a "lock-rite locker" which works accordind to previously stated, it is strong aswell though, it has been proven to last 2 seasons in various rally cars. only limitations no more than 200 real wheel horsepower and wont physically fit in 2 cars diffs, one being civic and one other not sure which (not 1200 ). maybe lock-rite have some info on the net about there locker you could check out. oh and there are a number of guys in melbourne at least that will do this work so its not dodgy in that way either.

took my diff in to get one this avo, spoke to the guy and he showed me how it works. its got two plates which apply pressure via. four springs to each side. with a car that had one fitted up on the hoist he showed us how both wheels spun together unless you put a bit of decent bit of force for them to spin in opposite directions. he said after it wears out the diff will act like open centre, but he said they have improved it and it will now last three or four rally seasons before being wering out.
