Hey guys,
Anyone in Perth or anywhere else in Aus got a sunny truck tray sandblasted and 2 pak epoxy zinc primed? I just got a quote for ~$600 cash worst case and was wondering if that was on the high side? (was more than I expected)

got another quote for $400
also starting ringing around about spray in liners. prices are $700+ Rhino liner told me they dont want a sandblasted tray or 2 pac primed. They prefer a rough scuffed and rusty tray and the liner adheres better... wtf sounds like a POR15 or KBS coating with texture. If thats the case why not just DIY with KBS or POR15?? Another mob said they dont want primer but if its really bad they will need to sandblast. That will add another $150-200 all those options are crappy black too, not colour coded +$900 for spray in liner for a 1200 seems expensive especially considering the size. Plus I'm DIY the rest of the paint job, my logic for outsourcing the tray was thinking their liners would be 2pak based or harder than a spray acrylic. Apparently all the liners are poly urethane or ureth based. You could prob DIY and put that on thing with a roller...

Sand blasting is ok but not really good on flat surfaces as it can warp.soda is okay but it's a bitch to clean up and you will have soda coming out of every were for a while.i had my whole car bead blasted and come out sweet.no panel damage at all.wasnt really cheap but gave me the perfect finish and the best start point.dont know to much about the spray lining but I guess depends what the utes for to how much you wanna spend

I want to use the ute as a ute. Chuck stuff in the back inc dirt bikes etc.
Tray is rough but no rust holes, just dented, surface rust and flaky old paint. I always wanted to get a spray in liner, i just assummed before I got this Id have to get the tray sandblasted... now Im thinking I might DIY and use something like this: http://www.herculinersales.com.au/index.html you can get a kit online for ~$80 + $80 postage from the states. From what I can tell its the same kinda product they shops use and charge +700 for. Now im just trying to work out if I need to sandblast first or if I can just paint strip, wire wheel and rust treat...

I have a huge sandblast plant and various small sandblast Equipment. I blast glass bead, copper slag, garnet, soda and shot, along with a few other more other abrasives. I charge around the $75.00 per square metre using the big plant and that gets you a spray primer coat too.
There is no better surface prep than a good solid sandblast, it is the best way to remove any trace of rust etc. I recommend going with the sand blast matey but it does depend on the existing condition and the budget. You can ask him for a whip blast which is a very quick whip over and takes approximately 30-40% of the time. This almost certainly makes it a difficult job to make a profit from though.

+1 for datrotors comment, grease up ya elbows. I'm going to wire wheel mine and etch prime it then hit it with that color fleck paint through an underbody gun. the longest part of the job will be masking up like most painting work.

Buy a U-pol raptor liner kit. Find out who in Perth supplies it. Same as rhino liner but heaps cheaper. $300 for a 4 litre kit. Can be tinted any color with 100ml of 2pk paint per 1 litre bottle. Use a shutz gun to spray it on.
Should last a very long time. Only prep needed is a clean with a scour and wax/grease remover. I would suggest buying a can of u pol etch primer to dust over the tray. I'm doing my shell underneath and the tray with the stuff You can view topic.
