#1 How to identify bluebird series 3 gearboxes?
woody Posted on: 2013/11/9 11:50
Hi guys its been a while since ive been in the datsun game. Just wondering if the bluebird series 3 wagon l20 gearbox will be either a 63 series or a 71 series. Ive been looking through the wiki and just confusing myself. There is a wagon with a box in it at a wreckers close to me and im after a 71 series. Do they have that on the side like most? What side is it stamped on? Its covered in crap and i didnt have time to get under it and have a good look. I will be going back at the end of the week and just wondering if its worth my while to pull it out
Thanks kurt

bluebird series 3 is a model unique to Australia and it also has a unique gearbox. ID is by the casting letters 'NMCA' on the side of the front case. It is a 71-series if I recall correctly. NMCA is Nissan Motor Co. pty Australia. It has a CA20 front case.

If it is behind an L20B engine then it has been modified. I wouldn't know how to confirm ID in that case.

Series III Bluebirds were CA20. Series II were the last of the L20's.
I have a 5spd out of the SII Bluebird parts car I bought for my 120Y project. The NMCA is cast above the mount on the passenger side of the box. It is a 71 box, but does not have that cast into it anywhere that I can see.

I have vague recollections from my breif ownership of a SI Bluebird rally car that some L series Bluebirds also had a crappy BorgWarner 5spd. Just something to look out for.

Borg warner Boxes have that stupid screw in plastic gear change holder whereas Nissan Boxes use a Pin for the gear change lever to pivot in.

its got the big oval shaped pin type shifter which is basically a bigger oval shapped version of the a series box I can remember that much. any identifiers of the borg warner box? its definatly a series 3 wagon but has the L20 in it and I think its a 2 piece tailshaft

Sounds like someone junked the original CA20 for the earlier & better L20 at some stage of its life.

I don't remember anythng specific about the BW 5spd, just that it looked nothing like normal Datsun boxes.

yes its a hm gem stickered engine now that I recall. looks like I might be pulling it out, even if it is a 63 I will have a spare for the a series. it was the normal shift pattern too

Im 97% sure it wont be a 63 series box mate especially not in a series 3 wagon. If my memory serves me right the series 2 and 3 5 speed box are the same just different bell housing. Some pov early bluebirds i have seen had a 4 speed box but you will tell straight away the difference there.
