#1 New with an SR20-DET Sunny Coupe
dragongoose1 Posted on: 2002/9/23 15:37
Names Allan,
I live in Brisbane and I have a Sunny Coupe with an SR20-DET in it. Was wondering what Suspension and Brake setup would be good??
I am running Stanza front struts and brakes and Stanza rear diff presently.
Thanks

Hi Allan. welcome to the club. I've only recently joined up too. You'll find this place is great, with lots of active members who are happy to help out, and some pretty interesting projects under way.

A Sunny with a SR20 turbo will definitely surprise a few people. How much work was involved in the Stanza diff swap - does it bolt in?

For front brakes, you have heaps of options. One of the better ones would be the fairly well known Verada disc (blank) and Commodore caliper. A cheaper and easier option is MR30 - R31 struts and vented brakes. With good pads these would probably be up to the job.

But if you want to do this legally, talk to a Dept of Transport approved engineer (who will be doing your mod plate) about what will be required for compliance. Transport keep a list of approved engineers.

Well I am impressed with the club and am well and truly impressed with the conversations and read up on everything. Surprised Really.
anyway about the diff yes it was a straight bolt in, the trailing arms are the same everything even the pinion location, but I think you would have to see about the tailshaft whether its dead bolt in coz i did an SR20-DET conversion (here we go again) using the stanza engine crossmember. The suspension components are exactly the same Just bigger brakes and diff, and motor in the Stanza. That puts another option for a motor for the Stanza crossmember a Z18-ET direct bolt in. You see for the SR to fit you have to reweld the mount on the engine crossmember slightly for correct angle to the SR engine rubber mounts. With the Z18 or L20b you wouldn't need to mmmmm
Well about the brakes I ended up using Tarago Disc Rotors with Hilux 4 Spot calipers and will get TRX Bluebird rear disc setup bolted to the Stanza diff...

hiya allan,my names paul,by my sign-in you can probably guess i've got a sunny, sedan though.about that stanza diff,it won't take the amount of horsepower you're putting through it for very long.the way to go is to get an s12 gazelle diff with a h190 centre, these are about the same track as the stanza, are still a bolt in,have big axles,& you can get a large range of axle ratios.i've got a h190 out of a c22 van in mine, but mines only got an a14 with an a15 crank in it at the moment.you can still put the bluebird discs on the diff.

does the Stanza engine x-member bolt into the Sunny?

Hi Paul,
Thats right you can put an Silvia or Gazelle S12 Diff in, didn't know how many people knew that, but I am glad I am not the only one, and I will do it once the house is built.
Hey Paul what did you use for front brakes, Oh and I had to do the Clutch conversion on the Sunny, that was a pain. But not that hard.
And about the crossmember yes it does bolt straight in, the whole front end is a bolt in affair from the Stanza to Sunny.

yeah Allan, my real name is Harry. I don't circuit race in improved production, just single or multi car speed events in the improved production class - Sprints and Hillclimbs, the occassional autocross... that kind of thing.

To go circuit racing requires a higher lever licence ($$) and more safety equipment ($$$) such as an approved rollcage, external battery isolation switch, window net etc to get your car log booked. Plus you need better brakes to last 10 or 15 laps, and have to be willing to get a bit of panel damage every once in a while. I would love to have a go at it, but I am quite happy doing these events. It's great fun and you only need basic safety gear, so it is accessible and affordable to everyone. Have you ever though about getting involved?

Yeah I am thinking of getting involved, but first I will get into it slowly and do what you're doing. You weren't at Morgan Park some time ago with mates in a 240z were you....just I think there was a guy there with a 1200 Coupe racing????? I dunno.....hey let me know when you go for an outing again.. I am very interested...My other half loves it too.

yeah, I was there with a mate with a white 240Z, but there were a few other 1200 coupes there as well. That was a round of the QLD Super Sprint Series didn't have a great weekend - a mate convinced me to try his old L20 instead of my L18, but it was alot slower. I now have the L18 back in the car and a few suspension tweaks that have improved the handling out of sight

My next event is a sprint out at Morgan Park on Saturday Oct 5. Starts at about midday and runs through until about 8pm We will be using the new full curcuit (daytime) and I can't wait. John Spencer will be there as well in his 1600. You might have heard of him - he won Classic Adelaide in that car a couple of years ago. Plus quite a few other fast cars from various clubs, but he will be the standout performer...
