#1 carbs for my truck
Linemender Posted on: 2002/9/27 4:06
Lo folks, new to the site. I came in looking for answers to my dilemma and figured you folks would have the answers. i bought a 77 Datsun Pick up for my son and it needed a rebuild on the carb. He rebuilt it and while putting it back on over torqued and cracked the flange. I have tried to find a Hitachi at the local yards to no avail. Is there another unit I could use without spending $300 on another Hitachi> If so what do I need in the line of manifold mocifications? I would be grateful for any help as I basically don't know squat about cars. I guess it would help to mention that the person I bought it from had replaced the original engine with a 1200. Thanks

Hello Morlan

If i understand your son broke the throtle chamber flange.

If it hapened you can always try to get the throtle flange and assemble it on the carb. It will be less expensive than the US$300.

However, i think that it will be still quite expensive, since over here it costs something like US$150 (new).

I don't know how it works over there, but here in Portugal you can always try to repair almost everyhing (e.g. by welding it).

You can always go to www.redlineweber.com if you are looking for a (good) present for your son.

I am now facing a problem similar to yours. My sunny B310 (US 210) carburator has a leak in the buterfly axles and I was asked the US$150 for the throtle chamber. So I am going to dissassemble it and it is going to be repaired almost for free.

Aditionally, i am waiting for 2 alfa romeo Weber Carburetors (they were free) for my car and then I will have to provide some new manifolds.

If you want to put a diferent carburator try to choose one from a engine with a similar displacement and with a similar power curve. With some luck you don't have to do any jeting.

Maybe the rest of the folks can give you a hand with this, since there is a lot of people across the US that share this passion for Datsuns.

Feel free to ask anything...

I hope it helps you

Best regards

Ricardo

save buying a new standard carb
why not put a DGV weber on with an adaptor? it wil return same fuel economy and breathe better throughout the rev range. and cost the same or less too!
if you do, remember to grind out the divider on the stock manifold and get a porting tool and match the bore on the manifold to that of the adaptor.. otherwise not much point doing it.

depending on where the flange cracked, a welder may be able to fix it. Use two gaskets after this to make it seal right.

I'm sure that in the Seattle area you could find a carb at the wrecking yards. Many yards specialize in 90s only or 80s, so look for yards that have older vehicles.

One of your local yards might belong to a hotline. If not, on the Web there are wrecking yard "hotline" sites where you can request a part, they'll find it and mail-order it.

Another idea is to use a Holley carb from a Pinto or Vega, if you can find one used locally. These are licensed versions of the famous Weber. You only need an adapter plate and to fabricate throttle linkage. You can buy a kit of all this stuff from redlineweber, but it'll cost a bit.
