So I'm in the US for work. San Fran for a couple more days then I head East to NYC till Sunday, with one week going through New Jersey, Philadelphia, Baltimore and maybe Washington (I'm still working on that). I'm wondering, where's a good place to go browse car parts that I might get in my suit case? Maybe even a wrecking yard.

I don't know if I'll have time to go to any but if I do I'd like to go browse. I'd be interested in an EDIS wheel, maybe a turbo. Not sure I'd get a gearbox in my suit case. Also good tool stores? You can never have too many tools

Another option is to buy and pack the parts, send them to yourself in Aus and come back to an awesome stash of parts!

Decent trigger wheels are good to get. 5 speeds weigh 23 kilograms. Post the bell housing and carry the box, or vice versa.

The only real question then is where to get them

Yeah pick pull had the edis parts cheap. But get your tools first.

Harbor Freight has absolute garbage.
I still shop there every once in a while and talk sh1t about myself while I'm there, but it's still fun to visit.
HF is good for cheap, use-once-at-home type of tools. For example, I have a few 1/4" die grinders. They are loud and not very powerful but, at $10, they are good for home use and disposable. The $80 portable band saw is surprisingly decent for home use as well.
There's one in Hayward and Newark across the bay.

Thank for the hot tips! Anyone know the East coast hot spots? I'm only in CA for another day. I might the afternoon tomorrow though.

California's pretty awesome. I like it here from the little bit I've seen.

East Coast is pretty slim when it comes to Datsuns. However there is alot of Z car parts and Z cars around. I've never seen any other Datsuns on the East Coast. Home depot and Lowes are the places to go on the East Coast for tools. Stay away from Walmart. ACE hardware also good but more pricey. Pennsylvania will have cheaper priced than both NJ or NY

Agree Harbor Freight do have some junk ... but in the end you generally get what you pay for and if I will only get limited use or if the tool is real cheap I love a 'bargain' .... just don't buy stuff with a lot of moving parts or that you would want to return
