#1 Newbie questions
Lauran907 Posted on: 2014/10/14 18:27
Hi all! I just got my hands on a 1972 Datsun 1200 automatic recently and i was hoping to get some tips and tricks on 1200s.

Any common problems?

Any upgrades I should look into?

I'm currently experiencing one problem with my datsun. It starts up great and drives great but if I'm stopping for 3 secs at a stop light or sign, as soon as I accelerate my car dies. But I can immediately turn it back on again. Any idea what's causing this?

Oh yeah my car currently has airbags suspension (I hate it, I'm either boucing around or I'm really stiff and I feel like the car will bottom out.) Needless to say I'm looking to swap that out for something smoother and more comfortable for daily driving. Any recommendations? Prices would be helpful too.

Anyone know of a good shop for datsuns in LA?

Anyways, thanks ahead for any replys!

Welcome!

No common problem,1200 is all good heheh.Best upgrade for 1200 would be the front brakes
As for the Problem at the traffic Light,Sounds like the carburetor needs servicing.Airbag suspension?Or Coilovers.Pics will help us help you.Have fun with your datsun.

It's just airbags, no coil overs. When I adjust them so my car is high, the ride is super bouncy and when I have it at the lowest setting, I feel every single bump or crack on the road. I'll try to get some pics later.

Also, how long do you usually let your datsun warm up for?

Thanks!

Welcome

With the engine cuuting out, I think darren is on the money with a carburetor problem. You do need to start with a general tune up before you get your carby looked at. Change all the filters, spark plugs, points and condensor. Check the timing.

Warm up should only be a few minutes depending winter or summer. When your temp gauge starts read and it will run without the choke on. Don't thrash it until it's at normal operating temp

The suspension could be a can of worms depending on how the airbags have been fitted and what they have modified. Photo's will be a good start.Good to hear you are pisssing them off, airbag's are for chumps.

Enjoy your datto

Probably not the carburetor -- or the tune-up parts.

Classic symptoms of a vacuum leak:

Very common with automatics. Leaks are commonly caused by cracked vacuum hose end, or by a broken vacuum diaphragm. See Vacuum Leaks.

Once the leak is fixed, the air/fuel mixture will need to be reset, as the leak affects the air/fuel mixture.

Another thing you can do is to jack up the idle speed from the normal 600 RPM in Drive to 800 RPM. While it doesn't fix the problem, it can keep it from stalling until you have time to find the cause.

Haven't had a chance to lift the car up to get good pics of the suspension but moving onto another little problem!

Steering is a little heavy for me. I have an aftermarket 13 inch steering wheel on it right now. Unless I'm rolling along its super hard to steer. (I'm a smaller female). What's some things I should look into doing?
