Dumb Question - Thermo fan
Tudoy

Hey i was just wondering which way should a thermo fan be installed. I've heard differing opinions like it should be blowing towards the engine to cool the engine, or, it should be blowing towards the radiator to cool it when stopped in traffic etc
Is there one way that cools more efficiently or anything??? Thanks

I have only ever heard of them blowing toward the engine either sucking or blowing through the radiator (to cool the radiator not the engine), fan blades are either left or right, meaning you have to have them running in the correct direction, the leading edge 'cuts" the air and the pitch of the blade pushes the air off the trailing edge in the direction you want the air delivered to, this is what determines which side of the radiator you'll have to mount the fan on.
An easy way to tell is that looking at the blade in such a way that the prop of the blade is concave the air will blow at you.

Also you'll probably find that it will only really run at low speeds (around town) at high speeds etc theres normally enough air through the front of the car to do most of the cooling

Thanks Matt..You've confirmed what i thought. Also...will a thermo fan really make a difference (cooling, power etc) to a standard a12???

When I had my coupe on the road last it had a fairly well modded A15 and I found that with the standard radiator (recored) it would get hot really quickly around town, I fitted an expansion tank from a ford laser and that was enough to keep it cool (just). When it was original A12 it was fine.

i found with a thermo fan on my 1200 coupe,it caused it to overheat, even with a triple core.this was due to the fan blocking air to the radiator, even with it running flat out.so,i went back to the plastic fan & a shroud i found in an wrecking yard on a 120y &,bye bye overheating.weird,i tells ya!

Blocking air to the radiator??? Did you have the fan installed on the outside (not the engine side) of the radiator?

Was it a dedicated automotive cooling fan? So often you see bodged heater fans etc fitted that don't work. I have never heard of that with a correctly fitted automotive one.

might have to get me an expansion thing for my 1200 it overheats on hot days in traffic with alfa radiator and mech fan, id love to go thermo but i think i need to swap radiator first
as was already implied, some thermos go on engine side and suck through some on outside and blow through but not visa-versa, theres not much room in the front of the radiator for a thermo so id think most 1200s have it on the engine side

An electric fan won't cool any better than the stock fan and stock shroud (for example, use the 120Y radiator and shroud).
However, a thermostat controlled electric fan is off when the engine's cold, and might turn off at high speed, freeing up enough HP to be significant. The air is always drawn from outside the car, though the radiator, and ejected out through the engine compartment. Like B310gx, I've also seen an electric fan installation cause overheating (on a highly modified engine), where putting the factory system back on fixed it. It depends on the fans, I guess. Most electric fan kits are just fine if they are correctly sized, and installed according to the manufacturer's directions. You can view topic.
