#1 Ls1s do they need a capacitor
thomen Posted on: 2016/1/20 13:03
Hi I've read on the megasquirt forums people mentioning wiring a 1uf capacitor in with them to clean up the signal.to the ECU.. Is this required? And if so what would that look like wiring wise?

Thanks!

surely follow the advice on there, not many LS1 guys on here

Capacitor is simple to setup, it just gets wired into the power wire leading to whatever requires it. most electrical devices use them.

you should get an idea of where they are putting them - on the power supply to the megasquirt?

Also, Datsun 1200 requires capacitor for the distributor, and another one usually on the coil to clean up the wiring harness signal

Looks like this:

Sounds like a filter capacitor. Best way to know is to have a look at the signal with an oscilloscope and see how dirty it is. There is a trade off, if the cap's too big you lose the edges of the signal and get ramps instead of steps depending on what signal you're talking about. If it's ignition, the ecu is either looking for a rising or falling edge, filter too much and you lose the edge, but if there's a lot of noise you can get false triggers.

Look up low pass filtering on wiki to get a feel for what it's all about.
