Has anyone shortened a stock h145 in a 120y?

I wonder if there is any excess spline on the axles even 10mm on either sode would help fit neg offset wheels.

I've shortened a H165 but I lucked out in finding a H165 diff, off who knows what, that had factory discs on it and the splines were 20 mm longer.
It now on my Coupe with +3 minilites

Took the axles out and it seems there is about 6mm unused spline.

I might shorten it 6mm or 10mm each side, it isnt much but should help abit with tyre to fender clearence.

I will have to cut the end of the axle by 6mm as it hits the spider gear cross shaft.

I could go in 10mm but then it will be engaging 4mm less on the spline.

Would this be an issue for a a12 engine? I dont think 4mm less should cause any problem consodering the a12 dosnt make much torque.


Also what is the best method to shorten the diff? The end where the axle bolts and bearing seats seems to be sitting inside the inside diameter of the main tube and welded on.

I was thinking to cut the weld knock the end of take of 10mm and weld it back on

Anyone see a problem with this?

I'm running a h165 from a 411 bluebird with an alloy head. It's 25mm narrower over all - 12.5mm per side and allowed me to run a 8j wheel on a coupe. They run the same spline as the later ute h165B but the axle tubes and axle diameter is the same as h145 (tiney). I mix matched some bearings, so I could run larger ute axles and turned 6 or 8mm off the end of the axle (because its to long in the housing) and releaved the end of the spline so it could slip in a smidge further to all work. Got pics if anyone is interested

zigmondo - you might be right regarding the axles. I might have to check on the spare 411 diff i have here.

Hi guys i was able to shorten my h145 by 20mm overall (10mm either side)

Axles hit the spider gear cross shaft so i had to cut the end a few mm. Its roughly 4mm less spline engagement on the diff but with an a12 i think it should be ok

If i ever find a spare h145 diff i plan to cut the spline section on the side gears and weld it onto my diff side gears just to increase its length and give it more engagement.

And yes the one issue is the brake lines and nipples arr quite close to the spring plate but it seems fine.

Handbrake cable had enough adjustment in it to take the difference luckily.
