Just got back from having a meal at the local "Outback SteakHouse". We had some questions for you aussies:

1. What is "BEERS" beer? They only had Fosters.

2. Do y'all have "Outback SteakHouse" down under?

After practicing my pronunciations for months, I was disappointed when the servers said "what?" when I asked for chaise froys. But I said it just like the advertisement ...

What are chais froys??????

I've never heard of outback steakhouse or "BEERS" beer. Sorry.

And Fosters isn't actually a very popular beer here (not anywhere I've been anyway). Most popular where I come from is Tooheys or VB (Victoria Bitter). Or in Queensland it is XXXX.

Outback steakhouse is owned by an American consortium, and yes we do have them in Australia. I dont know what a BEERS beer is but the most commonly drunk beer is Victoria Bitter or Tooheys New followed by Heineken.
I reckon the best steakhouses are Hogs Breath where they slow cook 500g steaks for 18 hours until they are sooooo tender they melt in your mouth. Dont know what chais froys are either, probably some marketing gimmick from the makers of Crocadile Dundee 2. I know they may mean cheese fries or cheese chips...anyone else more "dinky di" than me got any ideas?????

Yeah, it is cheese fries. There used to a be an advertisement where they taught how to "speak australian", but as you can see us americans couldn't get it right ... haha.

I knew you guys would know your beers. The current Fosters marketing line is "Australian for Beer", which made me suspicious.

Outback has a corny menu with items like "Grilled Shrimp On The Barbie" and "Kookaburra Wings", etc. I expect these are marketing names, doubt if any are real. Anyways, the food is good. They even have a Hummer H1 parked out front with kangaroos and things painted on it.

Yeah, fosters isn't as big over here as they make it out to be from what I have seen on TV/movies etc...
We also don't have those really big cans of fosters that you guys seem to think we all drink.

Chees Fries? Have no idea what they are. But they sound about as Australian as Bill Clinton.

From my research I have concluded that there are two types of Australian accent.

Australian Accent
And American/Australian Accent.

American Australian Accent is what all americans do when they try australian. Kinda half english cockney and canadian accent or something...

And when you guys say "Aussie"
It comes out as "Uss-ey"
When it is more like "Ozzie"
Oh yeah and while I am at it.
Emus.
They are emus.
Not E-Moos
Say "Eem - U-s"

That is all for now...

I heard that Fosters is actually marketed as an upmarket import beer over there. Here it is just considered cheap and nasty.

On that big beer thing...have you heard of the Darwin Stubby? Its a 2 litre stubby

By the way. Does anyone actually put shrimp on the barbie?? I think its waste!!

I think you mean "prawns"... and they're beaut on the barbie mate!

And yeah, I can't remember ever seeing anyone holding a Fosters... like everyone else said, it's marketed well overseas - that's all. My local beer of choice is Tooheys OLD, followed by VB. But there is a disturbing trend towards 'premium' designer beers at the moment.

you all are funny!!!

I used to work with a woman who grew up down under (Perth if I remember correctly)
she has about the same comments that you all do.
as far as the "shrimp on the barbie" thing, I think I need to look her up and ask her for a real deffinition, being as she still lives here in the states.

I guess the chais froys may be how you pronounce cheese fries if you are from Central Queensland...But Fries is not an Aussie word ..they should be cheese chips.

I was once shocked.. When I was once in Duluth MN, I asked for a steak and chips..I got crisps..what's all that about..Is that a meal?? OH man! Good thing I had plenty of beers to wash it all down.

Yeah I agree. I live in Sydney, and always have. We are less Australian than most. I think the global Aussie stereotype comes from Central Queensland or the Northern Territory. I'm reasonably happy having them as the Aussie Stereotype.

There's an Outback Steakhouse out near Parklea Markets in western Sydney. I've seen a few of the Outback Steakhouses around San Francisco. I'll have to go there again this April for work. Then I'll try out the Aussie version when I get back.

As an aside, I personally think McDonalds tastes much better in Australia. The US ones are too greasy. I think it comes out of the cheese and the beef. I've tasted Maccas in maybe 8 different Countries...

Shrimp on the barby..It's so "un-Australian" We call them prawns! It should be Prawns on the Barby (Which is of course short for Barbeque)

So if you want to improve your Australian..Try and watch the movie "The Castle" and catch up on some Home and Away or Neighbours...I'm not sure that they play in the USA though.

I also think that Sydney is the most international place in the world for food! We have the best of everything..except possibly Mexican food...You can't beat some places in Southern California....I've just eaten my dinner...Why am I hungry again!!!

Nothing like the twelvie club teaching people around the world about each others cultures...gee the world is getting smaller.
This club should be a unit in high school or uni in regards to teaching people the facts of life!!
