#1 sunday at oran park
b310gx Posted on: 2003/3/28 10:20
okay,it's been a week (almost),i've finally calmed do enough to tell people about my sunday of "relaxation" at oran park supersprint.first,i didn't know if i was running,as i was first reserve, but hauled myself out there anyway.being a reserve stumped the signin officials, who couldn't find my entry form,& so i held up the line for 10 minutes while they found it.got the scrutineerng forms, lined up in the lines, had a chat to some friends i hadn't seen for a while, got to the front finally,to be told my throttle linkages weren't to regulation,( i now know what stevo1000 is experiencing in vic).what they wanted was a return spring on each throttle shaft.the claim was that if a linkage fell off,i wouldn't have return springs.even though there are internal springs on dcoe's,they weren't good enough.what i was told to do was to fit 1 spring to the balance linkage between the carbs,& another spring to the rear carb.so i had 1 spring that really wasn't doing anything,& another spring that was really bodgy.then they picked on the numbers.the problem was they were white on black, not black on white.gees, did i enter an international event, not just a supersprint.so,my co-entrant spent $25 dollars on numbers so we'd be legal.the 'good' news was both my friend & i could run,but due to the 'fabrication',we missed the first run.so we got a run about 11:30,due to at least 3 serious oil spillages.on the first run found the car was hopelessly rich,& that they'd changed all my markers for braking points & turn-in's.gee,it's only been 10 years.so,we leaned out the carbs, gave it a tune, etc, during my second run, first flying lap, going good, second lap,it's pinging,it's overheating,it's spewing coolant onto the windscreen.i'd holed the radiator on the first lap, hadn't i.so,back on the trailer, lets go home, stopping for a set of lights, one of the ratchet straps breaks, the car jumps forward on the trailer,& lands on the trailer hitch.result, damaged bumper, lower valance, lower control arm,it's leaking coolant still.so,it's taken me a couple of days to get over it.& i do this to relax!& i've got a list of things that have to be done to make it go better.i've just got to change to the front struts with the commodore calipers & verada discs, the welded 4.6:1 diff, shorter rear springs, check the carbies,& fix the front end.the next event is late may,so i've got time, but if i see that scrutineer again,i'm not going to join his line.& i've been to carburetor services in sydney, who say fitting return springs to the shafts will cause them to twist & the butterflies won't seal on one cylinder.also,he hasn't seen anything in the cams manual about springs needing to attach to the shafts. maybe i should just do motorkhanas, all they check there is if the wheels seem to point in the same direction,& numbers are white shoe paint.paul.

Dont you love the joys of motor racing. And do you know what....its hard to stay away in spite of those days, because there are days when you put in the hottest lap and you keep talking about that same lap for a year or until you better it. Keep at it...I reckon its worth it. Its times like this that separates the men from the boys.

On that topic Paul I have the highly modified CWR Autokhana Sunny sitting on my front lawn at the moment. Would be great to see another Sunny out there but sounds like you have a heap of work to do before you could get close to this beast (once we get the wheels pointing in the same direction). I'd better go check to make sure it's still there...

I can't tell you how many times I've heard him muttering this from beneath one of his Dattos...
