Hey all. I havent got the slightest about cars. Im 17, and just passed my test ( www.angelfire.com/me4/kris1/dt.jpg )so im lookin for a car. Some lady that knows my mum is retiring, and has for sale a "datsun 1200" thats ALL i know. i doubt its a ute. I also know its done 45,000 km... and if it was made in 1976, thats 1,500 km a year. Shes selling me the car for $$700... does this sound dodgy? am i gonna get a car with a burnt out engine and rust holes everywhere? ill post pics on sunday if possible, which is when im seeing the datto

yep sounds good especially for such low mileage, i paid about $450 for mine with no rust. just check out the body first, should be great if an old lady has had it for so long...one thing puzzles me, werent most 1200s made around 1971 not 76. might be a later model 1600 or something, if it is then its really a bargain.

being 76, if it is a 1200 it has to be a ute
im picking its actually a 120y if its a 120y and got reg and rwc or is in top condition its worth it if it hasnt got one of these two things i wouldnt bother the 120y has a heavy front end and therefore is prone to understeer a 1200 is much better balanced and if you want a good car id be hanging out for a 1200

Hey guys, thanks for the info
Im guessing its 1976, like i said i know nothing about cars and my friends have told me most 1200 where made in the mid 70s. Im seeing it on sunday, getting it inspected soon after. Im mainly worried about rust, if the gears dont work or if the engine will blow a few days after i buy it... i mean, a 700 dollar car (australian) must have something wroung with it

Well, if you're lucky what's wrong with it is its thirty years old and the owner doesn't know what they have. If you aren't lucky, it could be a rust bucket with all kinds of problems. I have bought both kinds! Buy it anyway, once you have fixed it up, you'll know every bolt on it.

1200s (B110s) were made 1970-1973. B120s (120Ys) were made 1973-1978. 1200 utes (B120s) were made 1971-up. All were available with 1200cc engine.

Hey guys
Well, i saw the car the other day, and i gots ta say, it wasnt what i wanted. All i saw about datsuns was the pics on this site, mostly rally or drag coupes that kicked ass, but when i saw this datsun, before i drove it, i knew it wasnt the car for me. An old ladys sedan, a beige colour, drum non power breaks, slow as a cow, speed in miles, just didnt feel right driving it. So no datsun for me im afriad... if one of the admins wants to shut off my account that would be cool. Thanks for all your advice guys, if i ever find a datto in the future thats been done up ill come back to these forums

These Datsun 1200's seem to be well made cars. Mine is a 1971 Coupe model and relatively trouble free. I bought it in 1975. I have had to replace a few head gaskets over time, and most recently the carb and rear axle bearings. Other than that it doesn't burn oil and gets great milage for me as a work car. The body looks like hell though. This thing cost me $900 back then and I think that was a wise investment seeing I still drive the dern thing.
