#1 need help now with 1200
Posted on: 2003/4/18 14:02
okay the car is playing up again, just after ange looked at it last week.
Symptoms are, wont idle till hot, can hear a clikick from cyl 2 or 3 when cold and slight smoke when warming uop on partial throttle. It appears to be grey smoke so its either oil or fuel, i'm gyuessing fuel as im not loosing oil.
I plan on changing the plugs, they are iradiums with about 10,000 kms on them. Bullsht 100000kms. Fuel filter and points (i seem to be changing them regularly now, every 3000kms).
On tues will get a compression test to see if one of the cyl is down.
The slight spike in rpm is back as well from last time at part throttle and at around 95kmh, but dissappears when at 100kmh.
Any opinions?

grab one of my 32/36 webers i have sitting in the shed and put that on, (assuming problems are carby tunning relatated)

If the points keep going bad, replace the condensor as well (most common problem). Also check the ballast resistor and the resistence of the coil (less common, but if drawing too much amps, will cause the points to go out soon).

On the smoke, here's some general info:

- light blue/white smoke that doesn't dissolve into the air, but blows away until it disappears eventually: OIL SMoke. It could be just a little bit of oil. If it only does it for a minute after you start the engine, it's probably from the valve stems and won't show up in a compression test. If it's all the time, remove the oil cap while engine is running. If smoke comes out, the rings are bad, and if it's light, make sure the PCV valve is working correctly.

- white smoke that dissolves in the air: water vapor. Usually seen when engine is cold or outside temp is cold. This is normal and doesn't indicate a problem

- black smoke: Unburned fuel. Engine running too rich

Grey is puzzling.

black and white = grey (logical but unlikely).
Already lifted the oil cap, no smoke on idle, or after a drive (long or short).
Wouldnt mind the 32/36, but cant be farked playing with adaptor plates and cables at the moment. Did those plates get sent to australia, might want one now if i can get the webber off 1200rc.
Played with the idle and mixtures this morning, got it to idle smoothly at 1000rpm now, no longer at 1500 like it had too. But also the anti diesleing solenoid was mysteriously loose.

Fuel might have been leaking past the anti-diesel valve. That could cause the black/grey smoke. In any case, glad to hear it's working now.
