#1 L16 1200 coupe
DattoDoctor Posted on: 2003/5/29 19:42
Hi all,
got a few questions for ya. One of my coupes has an L16 / 4spd combo in it.
Q.1. What other dattos came with the L16 motor besides a 1600 ?
Q.2. Could u get an L16 with a 5spd box in any of these cars ?
Q.3 Does any L - series 5spd fit onto an L16 w/out any mods ? eg. off an L26
Thanks for any help!

I have a friend with a 1600 and he keeps braging that a skyline stumpy 5speed will bolt strait up to the L16 no wories

i don't know if this is true at all but its something to look into, hope it helps.

Yes..The stumpy skyline box would be a good choice for the L Series in a 1200. The box fit niceley in a 1200 Auto Tunnel. The Bellhousing suits an L24E engine, which is the same gearbox->engine mount bolts for all "L" series.

You'd need to make up a crossmember, and it should fit nicely under the bonnet.

The L16 also came in the A10 Stanzas (late 70s model 510 in USA)

q.1. pb110 exelent 1200-L14 4-spd, 14-/160z 120y L-14/16 4/5spd.

q.2. the 160z perhaps but rare

q.3. all L-series engines have the same bolt pattern for the trans mounting so yes

nose poke: you will have to look long and hard to find the stumpy 5-spd. but there are a few options the skyline, 200sx (s10 76-79)early and ugly, some special sport models of 1200-120y.

hope this is helpfull

Thanks for the info!
The stumpy 5spd out of the early skylines sounds like its worth a try. Looks like its gonna be a few trips to all the local wrecking yards.
Cheers!

Don't forget the 521 and early 620 pickups used the L16.

you could also try for an a10 stanza 5 speed, there's a couple advertisd in the ozdat classifieds, these also go into 1600's without cutting a new hole for the gearlever,so they might fit the l16 in a 1200 without too much worry.be warned, though, these are a dogleg first shift pattern.the skyline model you're looking for for the stumpy box is an r30.
