#1 stupid voltage question
Lobster Posted on: 2003/6/4 16:10
Ok pretty basic question:

How many volts should I be getting off the battery while it is off?
How many while car is running?
How many while car is running with everything going?

12 volts, more or less if the battery is fully charged and in good condition.

> How many while car is running?

13.5-14.5 volts, if the regulator is working correctly.

> How many while car is running with everything going?

13.5-14.5 volts, if the alternator is big enough for all the stuff you have. If it drops below this only under load, the alternator is probably defective, but it might also be too small. The original 35 amp alternator is fine for most unless you add big lights and super-high-power stereos.

geez, mine only had a 25amp alternator, that was pumping out 15 with the lights off and then 11amps with them on.
its now rectified with a big 55amp alternator and new regulator. runs like a dream, just have to reinstall the stereo

Yeah the 35amp alts are crap with big stereo's all my lights and headlights dim with the bass in my coupe, thats even with it turned down, I'm soon to upgrade though with my CA18 alt should be good
Cheers
