#1 Should I buy a Subaru STI?
ddgonzal Posted on: 2003/6/8 8:03
I'm feeling tempted to buy one. The US model has 2.5 engine turboed. 300HP, and 13-sec quarter mile ... should I do it?

I feel like this car is what the Mustang used to be: a muscle-car variation on the humble car (Mustang was based on Falcon/Pinto/Fairmont, and the STI/WRX is based on the Impreza).

Subaru WRXs are an awesome car and over here they are very popular. The biggest problem is thieves love them as well. A friend just down the road from me has had 2 stolen from his driveway this year!! I looked seriously at a wagon a while back but thought they were to small inside and the driveline repair costs for the clutch and gearboxes scarily expensive. But because the US don't officially import the Skylines I guess the next best would be OK By the way I took a GTR34 for a good thrash the other day, it had a ton of Trust gear in it and had over 800 Hp at the wheels with the boost cranked up. After driving that everything else feels slow...

Yeah..WRX STI Insurance could buy you another datsun every year...

You could have one of every model in less than 5 years. Just by NOT driving an STi WRX. In AUS, the STi is the rarer ($AU65,000) version. Considering the Standard WRX (150kWatw) is $42,000. That's a lot more cash..

ps. I'm watching Miss Universe 2003 on TV...It's very nice. Not only does South Africa have bakkies, they have a gorgeous entrant..

Chris.

i know these are older cars but did US ever get:

Nissan pulsar GTI-R

or

Mazda 323 Familia GTR

?

these are much cheaper and just as good as WRX's in my opion plus they are more scarce and ya dont look like another doctor or dentist having a mid-life crisis

ive only ever seen one wrx driver giving his car a bit of boot, it makes me sick to see so many beautiful cars (wrx's) on the road that are driven so timidly!!!

DD, Ive got a friend who I work with, who just bought a new STi and for $70000 AUS I was really disappointed in it when I drove it. There seemed to be no torque and I had to constantly keep it above 4000rpm to get anywhere in it. Plus he had someone try to rip it off but couldnt get it going, as it had satellite tracking, so they decided to scratch the paint on every panel of the car.....I dont reckon it worth the hassle unless you really want to get it.

Personally I've never liked the gearbox in the WRX's. Too notchy. Or the fact that, atleast in Brisbane, there are so many of them. But they sure sound the business! Also, as a bang for your buck proposition they are very hard to beat.

Save your cash and buy a good second hand GTR Skyline.
More poke. Looks better,Handles better.
Heaps more sex appeal.
You can screw a good 400-450HP out of them with stock turbos with a few mods.

i dont think we get the 2.5ltr turbo in nz. my mate and my girlfriends dad both own one so ive driven them both alot. good bang for buck car and the new ones are a vast improvement on the older ones. got to have a huge petrol allowence if youve got a heavy foot!! also got to have alot of $$ set a-side if you drive them hard. in the first year of owning his my mate had to replace the turbo and gearbox.

think, what could you do to a 1200 for only 10000-15000

hardly gonna be a nice family car but more fun i reckon and prob faster if you do it right, obviously not as much traction though
