Charge light query

Occasionaly at idle my charge light pulses in time with the engine speed, once you load it up (increase revs) it stops. The indicators will operate erraticaly also.
This doesn't happen all the time, just once or twice a week. My temp gauge doesn't work either, or so I thought as that will work sometimes for a few minutes then stop again. Do i have a dodgy altenator or some other problem???

Sounds to me like...The dreaded "white" wire overload syndrome...
The main large white 12V feed that goes to the fusebox from the engine bay gets overloaded.. This can melt and corrode the connectors that join the enginebay loom and the underdash loom. It can also result in melted fusebox connectors. Have look under the drivers side of the dash, and disconnect and inspect the condition of the 2 plugs that feed them loom through to the enginebay. If any of the connectors are corroded or melted, you'll need to replace the connectors which isn't a trivial job. The reason the light comes on is because of changes in resitance to the 12V feeding the dash guages. The sensor units supply varying levels of resitance to earth. I suspect corrosion in the loom connectors. Sometimes the round multiconnector that connects to the back of the dash can also get corroded, wiggle that connection on and off to freshen up the contact. Chris

Check the main fusible link. It's the big wire with two spade connectors (under the hood).
Would a bad ground wire cause this kind of problem? Make sure the engine is grounded to the frame by the big wire. Lastly, maybe the alternator brushes are nearly worn to the limit.

Yes, let us know what you find out.
I should mention I've had more than one alternator with the symptoms you listed -- and it was the alternator diodes. I replaced the alternator in one case, and the diode plate in another. But always check the basics, cause the symptoms can have easy causes too.

Went to work under the bonnet over the weekend!!!
Some of the loom plugs were corroded but i managed to pull them apart and clean the spade connectors. The plugs under the dash were fine.. I reterminated the earth to a clean part of the body.On a side note here, the battery is earthed to the engine with a large wire but the chassis earth is much smaller and from the same spot on the engine.Should i earth the battery to the body and the engine to the body seperately with larger wires?? After all the messing about my temp gauge worked for about 1 hour then stopped and the gharge light was still on............. Help me pls someone as this is begining to piss me off..
