The late A12 distributor should be interchangeable, but i do not know about "real" A12 ones. This is the 1200 engine with the foward mounted distributor.

Then it should fit. The "real" one Dodgeman's talking about are the early ones where the alternator's on the same side as the exhaust and carby(s).

The A10 & the A12 from the Datsun 1200 car had the distributor on the same side as the later A12's, A14's etc, but it was mounted up towards the front of the engine. These engines had the altenator mounted low on the left, or manofold side of the engine.
When the engine was redesigned to allow air conditioning compressor mounting, the altenator was moved to the place previously occupied by the distributor. This meant that the Distributor, the fuel pump & the engine mount on that side were all repositioned further back to allow for the altenators new mounting. ALL "A" series Datsun engines have the distributor on the same side, but some are to the front, & later ones are much further back. Chris

When was this change made and the engine mounts were moved too or was that a change at a later date?

The 1971-1973 distributor is different from the 1974-up distributor. It does not bolt right in. If you modify the mounting plate it will bolt in. A12 and A14 distributors from the same year physically interchange as far as I've seen, but as with any year the advance curve and emission controls (i.e. retard control) can differ.

i changed the dizzy from my A12 (1980) to my A14 motor, but it killed my dizzy or proably the dizzy was rooted anyway...... then i got a A12 dizzy off 120y, shop inter mixed the 2 dizzys to make a half decent one, that dizzy is on there now. it works fine, but could be better.
But dude, cut your losses and get a Electric dizzy....get rid of those dam points i have a Bluey 2 dizzy getting modifed to go in soon You can view topic.
