Datsun 1200 Dash Reconstruction

Hey Guys
Anyone ever reconstructed (from scratch) a Datsun Dash. I got my hands on some old Smiths gauges (oil pressure, temp, volts, fuel) And then hopefully adding the Speedo and Rev counter. Any ideas on what looks good? Someone suggested a Triumph Speedo and Rev counter but I'll think I'll run into trouble with the Rev counter (triumph = 6 cyl) If anyone has done anything like this then I'd be interested in tips, ideas??? I still have the stock dash, minus the dash pad. All these gauges are heavy and they reflect off of the windshield at night. The speedo connects to the stock speedo cable. The fuel level gauge is for a Chrysler sender, I think. Don't forget about the turn signal, brake and charge lights, like I almost did. ![]() (guess what i finally learned how to do)

man that is a serious investment in gauges, did you have to take out a loan to afford them, BLOODY HELL must be like $1000 worth of gauges

You should get into business redesigning dashboards!! Yeah $1000 would be a good guess as to the cost! That looks awesome bro! I think Im going to stick with old-school gauges (because I'm poor). Thanks for the inspiration dude... I know what to aim for now!

Wholy Cheet is right - that is sweet. I see the harness on the seat but didn't notice the cage , do you compete with the car. I had to ask because frankly all I use on my 1200 racer is a tach , water temp and oil pressure. I only check the guages about three times a lap so anything more seems to be overkill.

Yea, $1000 dollars is probably a real good estimate. I never did add it up, nor do I want to
. Honestly, I would rather spend the money on this instead of a $1000 paint/body job. I can't see the paint from the inside .No I don't race. I'd like to autocross someday. With a wife, house, and 9 month old baby girl, I barely have time to deal with the normal wear and tear maintenance. I agree, for serious competition, this dash is too distracting and very heavy. For street / daily-driver use, I like being able to see what's going on.

I fit a 240Z 160mph speedo in my old 1200. Complete with trip odometer. In the US, we only got round gauges in the 1200's and 240/260Z's are pretty easy to find in the junkyard. The 240Z speedo body is almost identical and bolts right in. It's even calibrated the same. On the face, in tiny letters it says "60mph=1060rpm" or whatever. I found the same on the 1200 speedo.
The face however will need to be trimmed a little. It's just a hair too big in diameter. Just remember to cover the mechanicals so the metal shavings don't end up stuck to the magnet. Also, for the trip odometer, you have to drill a small hole thru the gauge housing and PCB. If I remember right, I had to solder a jumper wire around the hole for the turnsignal light. It's pretty easy. If you have both speedo's in hand, it should be easy to figure out. I know i've got a pic somewhere.

I am kinda looking for a radio. It could probably go in the glove box location. I found this... Secret Audio but it's a little too expensive and they only interface with their cd changer. You can view topic.
