Hi Guys...

Here's a further update on the A14...

I got a good look at it on the weekend and it's got a brand new clutch assembly as well as a machined (I'm assuming slightly lightened) A12 flywheel as well. The bottom end looks fine and won't need any machining, just a honing. I may still decidee to bore it out say 40 thou but the good news is that the motor isn't a DOA. Further evidence of it being looked after are the new plugs, points, condenser, etc.

So for the puchase price of $100, I don't think I've done too badly.

I'll keep you posted with pics as the story unfolds.

Maybe in South Africa A14s are so low-powered. But US A14s have just about the same peak HP as a US A12, and considerably more low-speed HP. The reason the stock A14 doesn't have more HP is because the stock carb is limiting the airflow. If you just change to a larger carb, the A14 with a 32/36 will have more peak HP than an A12 with a 32/36.

Your A12 GX engine has a similar cylinder head to the A14 (oval ports). So even though the peak HP (what's listed for your motor) is more, an A14 with a similar induction system (head, carbs, cam and exhaust) will make more power than the A12 GX.

The real question here is: will a "stock A14" make more power than some other engine? It depends on what year, model, country and condition the A14 is in. They vary quite a bit.

Baloney. He probably said that because he doesn't have any A14s to sell ... but he wants to sell you something.

The A14 is as strong as the A15. But the A15 is a larger engine and so (with the same head, cam, carbs, etc) will make more average horsepower.

I race with an A12 because I have lots of parts and because up until switching to Vintage I had to have an A12 per the rules. Now that I can choose I will put in an A14 eventually, in the mean time I will use the GX bottom end with the H-prod Head with Weber DGV carb. So your plan of runnig the A12 into the ground and building your A14 is a good one , althought it may take 5 or 10 years to kill the A12!!! I have been racing with the same bottom end since 1991.

My engine plate:
A12GX = 56kw and 109nm torque.

My advice: get a A14 block, GX head and a decent carb.

hey 1200gxman, i have a ute with a a14 in it. i think when u dragged the ute at the lights when u pulled away from him is because utes are really low geared so when u put it in third your gear ratio helped you get ahead.

but i dont know you probly have more power, i just thought it could be gearing

I disagree holeshot, the a14/15 have different strokes but same bore diameter.

A 14 has the same crank as A15, bore is bigger 82mm i think,A14 is 76mm.Bore it out to 77mm and you get what thay call a square motor 77mm stroke 77mm bore thats what i did.Bit of head work scaveng plate in sump advanced the cam a bit, good carby, good fuel, pointless dizy, timing dead on the rite place, 2in ex/pipe to.Thats good for a bit of street fighter.

the gx head has the best ports , plus that ute could have had an emissoins type (smog dog) head.

Hi guys.
Everyone is prasing the A14 here.
I would like to get a few answers please.
When I wanted to convert to a A15 engine I phoned a place here that imports used japanese engines.
I initially wanted a A14 but the guy said I must take a A15 as the internals are stronger than A14.Please give comment on this?

Another thing.
One night I took on a standard A14 utility with my standard A12GX.
We dragged traffic light to traffic light that are about 400m apart. They were 3 traffic lights after each other.
Everytime when I hooked 3rd I started to visibly pull about a car length out of him.
Is the A14 then really so good?

OK.I must admit.
It is a utility that maybe are created for economy and not performance like GX.
What I mean is, correct me if I am wrong, to get full potential out of a A14 you must modify it.Weber,cam,etc,etc.
This is my experience.Please feel free to disagree with me.I enjoy a good chat.
