It was the external regulator. Since the A14 has an internal regulator. I disconnected the external regulator and now it the engine stops running when I turn off the key.

Do I just need to connect the IG wire to the F wire at the external regulator connector?

yeah mine is running on when i got it the guy had left the 1200 radiator in after the egine swap and it was running hot as hell. so i put a 2ltr escort radiator in and it has brang the temp down to about half still not happy. the head is comming off soon so i'll have to check a couple of things

disconnecting the battery won't make the engine stop straight away. It'll fry the alternator, and stop that way.

We've run a bush banger 1200 without a battery (batteries are normally on short supply when you start mucking around with bush bangers) and it went for quite a while.

The internal regulator issue is a wiring problem, and so doesn't depend on temperature.

Is you engine "running on"? Mine is not, it continues to idle perfectly, as if the ignition switch hadn't been turned off. Running on/dieseling seems to be temperature related.

i have the same problem with my 1200 ute it has an a14 in it now. it does it more so when it's hot then cold. the ute is a 85 model so would it still be internally regulated?

I had this problem once, turned out to be the ignition switch being faulty.
Theyre definatly not the strongest switchs around.
The key might seem that it is turned off, but it wasnt, the contacts on the inside were faulty.

Ah, that makes sense. The A14 is a 1980 and has the 1980 alternator. I didn't think about it being internally regulated, yes the 1200 has the external regulator still connected.

are you now using an internal regulator alternator???
when I got my car, it did the same thing, someone had put an internal regulator alternator into it and did not eliminate the external regulator. if this is the case, the alternator will continue to supply voltage to the coil and distributor even though the ignition has been switched off. the easist way to check for this is to start the engine, turn off the key (so it's still running), and then disconect the T conector at the back of the alternator, that should make the engine shut off. IF it does, you will need to make a decision to either put the external alternator back on it, or remove the external regulator and change the wiring to work with an internal alternator. it's a no brainer to make the change to internal unless you are trying to keep the car completely original. if this solves your problem and you want to stay with an internal regulator alternator, let me know and I explain how to make the changes.

You may have the wire from the positive on the alternator directly feeding to the coil positive,

so even if you shut it off and disconnect the battery the coil is still punching out current.
