So 40's are worthwhile if the motor is built and still give a noticeable bit extra on a stockie..... But is it worth the extra money over a 32/36 downdraught?...... or a set of SU's??
I've got a pair of 1.5 in SU's on an L series manifold, but they need a full recond- I'm trying to decide if its worth the effort to sort them out and find/ fabricate a manifold for them. The engine is an A-15 with mild cam extractors & lightened fly & stock carby..... goes alright but not great, still takes about 10 sec to get to 100

As for the story about about Webers being no longer available that is complete horse ####. Weber sold the manufacturing rights and they are now made in Mexico. DCOE and IDAs are still available new in all the popular sizes. Yes the rights were sold some time ago, some carbies were produced but from what I have heard they also stopped manufacturing about 12 months ago. By the way, if anyone is seriously looking for a pair of 45 DCOE's I have some I may consider parting company with for the right price.

I am also pretty sure that a bog stock Aseries will not even run with twin carbies, the cam is not large enough.. maybe SU's tuned down alot but not Webers, could i be wrong? Now c'mon, you should know this because your Webers came off a stock A15. My A15 was running a stock carby and a set of extractors. When I fitted the twin 40's there was a huge difference in power and response. It was definately worth the money. I don't think you'll be using sidedraughts to their full potential unless you build the motor, but they are still worth putting on a stock motor.

Fit the sidiedraughts mate.....you will want to fit extractors/headers at the same time cause you rarely get an inlet manifold to clear the standard exhaust manifold. To really make use of the carbs you should fit a new performance cam and you will be pleased with the transformation . As for the story about about Webers being no longer available that is complete horse ####. Weber sold the manufacturing rights and they are now made in Mexico. DCOE and IDAs are still available new in all the popular sizes.

My 2cents,
When PROPERLY set up and tuned, There will be a performance incraese on a stock motor. What was said before about the cam not being big enough, Not exactly true. Smaller chokes, and the fact that A stock donk wont rev much past seven grand, means that they should be able to do the job fine. ( lower top revs meaning no loss from the smaller chokes) Plus, with the A14 having the best rod:stroke ratio, cylinder filling wont be an issue. However, getting them all set up right is kind of an art, requiring the right equipment. just going out and buying a pair of a 150bhp race motor, and chucking them on, will lead to all manner of woe.

I have run twin 40's on worn out, standard A12's before and the engines have no trouble revving through to 7000 and develop more power than they did with the standard Hitachi. With regard to the A14 question I have a standard one in good condition that would fly on 40's - I know it's not optimum use of sideys but if you've got them don't think you have to rebuild your motor before you can enjoy using them.
