The GTO's were sold new in NZ and were extremely popular and many still survive. There was a hotter GSR version with twin carbs and screw on flares they are still one of my favourites.

Noticed the GTO's in NZ. I wonder if they were all private imports?

Those GTOs are getting pretty expensive over here. They are the nice Mitsubishi.

those golfs are mad :)

i've got a photo of a Mk1 golf when i was in germany - this thing was radioactive green, about 50mm off the ground with 13x9s under it with about 3in flares all round.

it was phat, it was mean, and had audi turbo power. i was weak at the knees.

Here's GTO Story website.

Low res pics, but still worth a look.

OSI may want to post the url on his site.

As for the tyres, it must be a Japanese thing ,as I see lots of cars on Japanese sites with really wide rims but tyres that are not wide enough for them.

Here in Australia you see guys putting 235s on 6 inch rims, with the opposite effect.

Can you imagine rocking up to Bob Jane & asking for those tyres on those rims.

would look great if the wheels were 2 or 3 inches narrower.

but hats off to the tyre fitter for managing to get those tyres onto the bead. I've fitted plenty of tyres in my days and I have no idea how they managed that... must have a tube in there... still, i would have been hiding on the other side of the workshop when that lunatic was at work!
