I had a good machine shop replace the uni joint and set it up with a C clip for future replacement if needed about 125.00 US

there are some 1200 tailshafts that dont have replacable uni's, anyway like what 120fly said u are best of to jump under and look 2 see if there is a C clip for your uni's then u will know wether 2 replace em or go on the hunt for another tailshaft. good luck

Climb under the car have a looksy at your unis .there should be a C-clip thats removable .remove these and the uni sould pop out with abit of help .....check the holes were the uni goes in so its not ovall .if its ok order the unis from a truck dealership they should be able to size something up for you iv done a few unis myself .
Or your local repco should have what you want or beable to get them .............Have a read of your manual if you have one or a datsun manual of some sort may have more info on unis int diiff section hope this helps

That's right Dave, these uni's are not replaceable, so therefore you will need to find another tailshaft.
You can usually tell if it's on the way out as there is movement in the end. Also when your changing gears, you will hear a sort of a tink noise, especially in the lower gears, as this happens occassionaly in my white 120y coupe. Hope this was of some help.

The datto does like a good spot of vindaloo everynow and then! i make sure i give it ice cream afterwards tho so it all comes out nice and smooth later
Rightio so the uni's are most likley the problem for this problem. They arent replaceable yeah? How do i know what a f*ck uni looks like when i go to look for a replacement tailshaft at the wreckers? Would a bad one have lots of slop? Cheers guys for the quick reply! Dave

your not feeding your car curry are u? usually that will make a rear end problem...
nah for sure uni's change them if its still there, then start looking at the diff for bearing damage ect

Yep sure sounds like uni joint noise. The other thing that is ofter very hard to find and gives similar vibration to what you describe is the wrong preload on the pinion bearing in the diff nose.

Gday guys, i just recentley was given a diff (thanks to the member!) and i thought that this would eliminate the noise that is coming from the rear of my car - wrong.
The noise is a loud clunking coming from the rear on de-acceleration. ie when not stepping on the gas like pulling up to the lights or going down a hill. It only happens at rev's under about 3800RPM otherwise the noise is not there. And when im coasting the noise isnt there either, it happens in everygear. I took it to a shop (driveline specialist) and he took it for a drive with me and he said yes it most probably is the diff but he said leave it with me for about an hour and ill have a look also. (and no i didnt get ripped off but yes he looked at it some more just to be sure for free - top bloke!) The diff is a H150 unit but i am using a 56a box and the tailshaft that came with the car (60a box so 60a shaft). In my service manual it says it could be excessive backlash but it cant be that as ive tried another rear end. Im most likley guessin its my uni joints and they have excessive slop in them, you guys reckon im on the right track by saying this? And u-joints cant be replaced yeah, so im going to have to find another tailshaft.
