It is the next step on from a Learners. A P plate is a provisional licence which may have restrictions that a full licence does not e.g. not allowed to carry passengers or drive during hours of darkness. The plates must be displayed on the front and rear of your car and there are 2 colors - red and green. This goes on for a couple of years unless you accrue enough violation points then you get to start again. I hate to admit it but whether it is due to this system or not Aussies are pretty decent drivers - not quite up to New Zealand's standards though.

hey guys, just wondering what this "P" plate stood for? Is it like a Canadian "L" plate as in learners?

Hey Scotty
I am also 16 years old but from Canberra, I have a 1200 ute, do as the others said, re build every thing else you can do without doing to much to the motor, re spray it, get rid or the rust, re do the interior first, get every thing looking good then think about the motor last, mine is nearly ready for spraying and its looking good. I have not even thought about a motor yet. Lucky you get you Ps at 16.5 I have to wait till 17 it sux. Good luck on the car hope it all works out. Dom You can view topic.
