Thanks for your help and pics 1200__ute. Very neat system underneath, and you have an abundance of clearance in comparison to mine. Back to the drawing board. Thanks again.

Here is a pic of my exhaust
Also the cat works its best after it has heated up. If it is to far back then it is likely that it will take a long time to reach operating temp, or it might not even get there. Best to have a quick chat to your local exhaust shop on what they recommend. And I think you need to comply with the emissions requirements for the car the engine came from not necessarily the original datsun requirements.

the cat can go anywhere along the exhaust. up near the tray would be fine, aslong as it is secured tightley enough that its not goin to shake around.
my question is what year is your ute? and does a ute that is pre-cat time with a post-cat engine need a cat or not? im asking this because if your ute is old enough not to need one, i wouldnt bother with one. unless of course you need one for the new engine.

My ute has a section in the floor which is raised for the cat. It is just next to the trans tunnel on the passanger side near the gear stick hole.

My ute is not super low, fit hand between top of tire and front and rear gurads. Where abouts is the normal spot for your cat ? I am running my exhaust along side the subrail on the passenger side.

How low is your ute. I'm running a 3inch system and my ute is fairly low (tops of front tyres are level with the gaurd, rears are slightly tucked) and I still have roughly 125mm of clearance from the bottom of the dump pipe. I am also running a metal substrate cat which is only 4in in dia and it is tucked up a little into the original spot for a cat. I'll try and post up some pics when I get home tonight.

Hi all, i have a 1200 ute, ca18det engine and g/box. I have started to make the exhaust for it 2.5", and it appears to be very close to the ground. i trial fitted the CAT, and it also seems too low to go over a small speed bump, yet it is resonably close to the floor pan of the ute. My question is, how far back can the CAT sit from the motor, could i sit it up under the tray of the ute ? How have others overcome the height issue ? some pics or details would be great.
