I barely recall but the designation of the gearbox in my R32 Skyline was FSW5.. something like that.
I imagine that S stands for the same thing - if some one whos got a Skyline knows maybe they can enlighten us. Too long ago for me to remember - I can't even remember my password to skylinesaustralia.com

There were no gearboxes in this era that were made without synchromesh, so I don't think it would be necessary to add something that signifies that the gearbox DOES have synchro, to differentiate it from those WITHOUT synchro.
For this reason, I do not believe that it is a designator for 'synchromesh' When a shorter extention housing was used on some versions, the letter 'L' was added to differentiate these versions from the short ones. I believe that the short extention housing models use the letter 'S' as the last character in the gearbox model code for this purpose, although I do not have confirmation of this. It's the 'S' in the second character position that I am curious about.

I think maybe it stands for synchromesh? Also the L stands for dogleg shift pattern i believe.

Dont the aussie stanzas and the 180b 5 speeds are 60 series and the sss versions had the 63?

Aha - of course - thanks dd.
But I'm not sure if the Stanza's here other than the SSS were sold with 5 speeds. (SSS = 63A box). Damn you Nissan - why couldn't you have just offered 5 speeds at no extra cost???

The 60L 5-speed came behind A14s. The L is a dogleg shift pattern. Used in 1979 models and maybe early 1980 models.
It is possible the "late model 510" used them as that web page indicates. "late model 510" is the USA model 1978-1982 "Datsun 510" or Nissan chassis code HL510, which appears to a variation of A10. They used an L16 engine.

Your're right according to this - late model 1600's had them. I'm betting they are as rare as the A series ones though...

i think and this is extremly unconfirmed that 60 series 5 speeds came out of 1600's
