The mainstaft nut will be loose. At first it will jump out of 5th and in extreme cases dissapear.

Ive had a few behind my ca18det I never had any 5th gear problems although the input and cluster sheer teeth if you give it too much also slow shifting & crunchy with decent power. 2nd and 3rd gear break most often. 5th gear is normall only a cruise gear I cant see why it dosnt go in unless maybe the selector fork is broken??
once pulled appart you shoudl be able to see.
Cheers Andrew

I have a stumpy box on a ca18det and it has 5 gears, but does not like changing down into second gear at high revs, but after about 10 laps it seems to be ok. Changes great into 5th tho.

Nah, I pulled it from the skyline my self... Its definatly meant to be a five speed, yet it makes no noises or grinds but only has 4 forward gears.
