i had a stanza shaft cut down with mazda slip-yoke welded on for my ute when i first converted it. the tailshaft guy said the uni's were fine. i had vibration issues from day 1.

I assumed it wasnt the tailshaft as it had just been balanced. Eventually when i couldnt work it out i took the shaft back and he checked it and said it was fine.

I then had the same shaft modified again by the same bloke with toyota rear yoke to suit my hilux diff conversion. Again he said uni's are fine and still had the same vibration.


after 6 months, 2 diffs, and 2 gearboxes i finally took the tailshaft elsewhere.

unis were shot. uni's replaced, balanced. and the car felt like brand new.

thats why i say get a 2nd opinion.

Love the colour of that ute!
My gearbox is recon as well but must have been thrown together, the sinchro seems a bit ordinary. I just don't know where to start.
The uni s seem fine front and back.
Should I take it back to the place that first balanced it and have a whinge or just go somewhere else?

get a 2nd opinion on your tailshaft

and put new uni's in it if they didnt when they modified it.

well in my case both the tailshaft and the gearbox are new like 1 meeting old so its not good that a reconditioned box has s#!t itself on its first meeting. but the tailshaft was extended to get rid of the woble but it has reduced it so that should be ok.
i dont know i guess we can put it down to the excuse CARS

Which came first the wobble in the tailshaft causing the gearbox bearings to fail or vis versa

well simon i have been having the same problems so if you find a cure let me know. i also thought that it may have been tailshaft because mine only hapens at high speed in fourth gear. does this happen to anybody? is this a common problem?

I've had a vibration in the car for a while now, and it really kills the idea of an enjoyable driving experience!
I've had the wheels balanced and aligned, the tailshaft has been shortened to fit between the l20b and the sedan bw diff.
At first I thought that the tailshaft had not been balanced properly (it has some massive balancing weights on it), so I crawled under the car yesterday to see if a weight had popped off and I noticed that if I gripped the tailshaft near the gearbox and pushed and pulled sideways it had a slight bit of movement . Not a lot of movement but still just a detectable bit.
Now I'm thinking its the bearing at the end of the gearbox.
Any suggestions??
