Thanks for the info fellas. I've just been doing a bit of self learning with the oxy lately and i came across this today and i thought that it had been brazed. When using a bronze filler rod do i have to use a flux and make sure that the surfaces to be brazed are clean? Thanks again

The weld material is bronze. Fusion welding is the welding process were only the two similar metals are welded without any filler material. This process pictured is called brazing. It will melt out at a lower temp than the steel. I would recommend either using a Mig welder or preferably a Tig.

You can not weld steel to the brazed area. You will need to remove that material or weld near it, but not on it.

It's most likely brass. And they must have been brazed from the factory. The brazed joint will melt at a much lower temp than the steel so if you were to weld new it I'd expect it to distort slightly. shouldn't be too much of a problem if you weld it in bursts just to avoid heating up the material around the weld too much.

After removing a heap of bog from my cowl panel today i uncovered an area that looks like it had been patched up before. Next to this patch is a goldy coloured weld. Im assuming this weld is factory. Would i be correct? Anyone know what filler material it is? And would it have a lower melting point than the mild steel filler rods to avoid distortion? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
