There's gotta be a reg somewhere because without one the voltage will rise way up and fry your whole electrical system!

Without a regulator, alternators are capable of 100's of volts. You can even use one as a 3 phase mains generator if you remove the internal diodes and spin it fast enough.

I've made a custom 24V alternator out of a 12V one with a custom made regulator - works a treat!

ahh, alright that helps.

problem is my loom isn't in a very sound condition & 1/2 of this stuff is just outright missing....

I'll see what the loom from the stripped shell is like, IIRC it was flawless on the engine bay side & had the regulator.....

Cheers for the help

haha i just went thru this exact same thing on my 1000 with A15. I moved the altinator to the late model position and therefore had to re-wire it!

If it has F&N then its external reg.

There are 4 wires going into a reg, 2 out.
The 4 going in are A E F N

A - The main power feed from the altinator
E - The main Earth feed from the altinator
N - ?? Just hook it up with the respective colour wire on the N terminal on the reg. Check your wiring diagram
F - ?? Just hook it up with the respective colour wire on the F terminal on the reg. Check your wiring diagram

Leave the other 2 as they are.

I did this but the IGN light stayed on and started chargine at 14v... then went to 16v and kept rising... i think my reg is ####ed!

Hey Guys,

My parts 1200 has an A14 in it that I'm planning to swap into my good shell once it's painted, but the loom in the parts car is very molested to put it politely & the alternator isn't hooked up.

I've been reading the techincal Wiki, my Gregorys 120Y manual etc & I'm still confused as.

The Hitachi alt on the engine (not sure of model, can't find one on it) has the obvious 12V & earth points (labeled "A" & "E" respectively) and the T shaped plug is labeled "F" & "N", which is what the stock 1200 ones would have on it AFAIK?

Can't see anything like the external voltage regulator pictured on the site/in my book - nor can I see provision for one in my loom anywhere.

How do I tell what the hell I have guys?

Then, how do I wire it?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers
Ash
