this is the way CAMS approval works:

log book/pre-race inspection is only to check eligibility of the car and that it has all the required safety gear.

the cage is registered with CAMS seperately, before the log book/pre-race inspection. A CAMS Cage Registration form has to be signed by the cage builder to certify the materials used and the welding and workmanship. A reputable cage builder should have the forms, otherwise you have to contact your CAMS state office.

i think it was the vic guide lines i was reading a while ago that said you could have full cage, as it gave measurements of how far away from the roof and a pillar it had to be and where it could come down in relation to the front door and such

and if your car had retractable seatbelts standard you cant have a harness in use when a police man sees you.....which is good for 1200 sedans with their non retractable belts

for my say in the matter, i dont think they can be painted or powdercoated BEFORE cams approval because the guy that looks at the welds needs to see that they are of good penetration, without that they would fail the cage. but after it would be fine
as for road use im pretty sure that you tecnically can only have a half cage installed, that is that no bars are allowed to be, beside or in front of the driver, for obstruction of vision reasons (thats a load of bull$#!t if you ask me)
which is just the same as no road car can have a race harness installed unless it is the crappy standard seat belt buckle 4 point type
thats my understanding for nsw regulations

basically when i got my car log booked I could have had anything in there once painted who would know....the guy from cams barely looked at the car. he just wanted to chat all day and gave me the ticket. For my own piece of mind though I followed the book...oh and by the way the car WAS rolled at Suttons corner at Oran Park and the driver (not me) emerged from the car onyl with his pride and wallet dented. Thank God.

I was under the impression that each cage had to be certified by someone from CAMS, not just the prototype then the rest are certified without inspection. Hence the no painting. Obviously they can be painted after they are certified.

Before anyone fits a cage remember there are three authorities that you need to comply with your state roadworthy body which I believe in most case state if your head can touch it its not legal for a road car.

and the CAMS requirements a very stringent involving how its welded where its bolted the style of the bolting process the materials have to be exactly the right type and thickness also the front legs can only have a set number of bends in them and the rear legs must be straight there has to be a diagonal in the main hoop and the list goes on. Once you fit a cage you must also fit a harness for CAMS events.

ANDRA also have a similar set of regulations that must be complied with

If you ever intend to register race or drag the car make sure you read the online documentation for each of these first

its just for looks . . . and i dont plan on rolling it lol

I didn't plan on rolling mine either but a good cage makes ALL the difference. but, then again mine's a race car and you did say it was only for looks.. just don't get too confident in it's capabilities if you decide to go racing.

Spence, check out the CAMS and roll cages website- Or ring them. They have the requirements of what roll cages have to made of etc...

And yes you can paint them......

Interesting enough I was at a WRX day a couple of weeks ago, and the scrutineer was saying that because it's club racing and not a state level or higher, it doesn't HAVE to be of any particular material. (Sorry, don't know about drags) A guy had an R32 there that was seriously quick and had a gazillion horsepower, and because he decided to run slicks, he had to have a cage. He made it up only a day or 2 prior, and was certainly not of a "hardy" material, but it was metal and that's all he has to have. Again, i'd hate to think what would happen to him if he did tip it. He even boasted his helmet was $95 and cage was under $200.

So, I guess the upshot of this is that yes you can use different materials depending on what they are going to be used for, but be sure you are confident you can be at peace with yourself if someone does tip and the cage doesn't do it's job.

Cheers,
