My FSM says for H165:
Quote:
Ring Gear
Backlash between ring gear and drive pinion mm (in)
0.13 to 0.18 (0.0051 to 0.0071)
So the official Datsun specification is very tight. Much tighter than 0.5mm.

R160: 0.1 to 0.2 mm
H165: 0.13 to 0.18 mm
H190: 0.15 to 0.20 mm

As it is I am in a bit of a spot where I can't tell if I my gearbox is broken or the H150 diff, can't get the drain plug off the box to check the oil for decent shavings, though with the amount of backlash the diff has in the car and oil seepage I wouldn't put it past the dif to have rooted something.

Any torque applied in 3rd adn 4th (or high in second so has to be output speed based) brings out a hell of a whine and scratching (the scratching should be sorted out as some bolts were scratching the tailshaft)

so with that in mind I thought it'd be a good time to switch in the new diff ect while I work on the W58

my mate did some checking and came up with 0.5mm as being acceptable, just wondering if other people have set more\less for racing applications?

Aren't these a torsen type centre? i.e. no friction plates or viscous plates and therefore normal diff oil? The friction modifiers are for the clutch plates (I believe).

I can check my manual on the backlash tomorrow if no one else responds.

It is my understanding that Nissan recommends normal diff oil for Nissan vehicles using that sticker. So it is misleading. Just a high-quality GL-5 oil, synthetic oil is not required. 80W-90 is the usual, but depending on temperature other viscosities may be used (75W-140 for example).

What would be more interesting is what the LSD manufacturer (topgear in this case) recommends.

That was implied DD, I just don't want to put jello in my diff when there is something that works good.
