#6 Re: 5spd Gearbox

Once you get used to them, I find I actually prefer them. The only bugger is that in my sh1tbox work truck I'm always trying to select fifth gear when I'm already in it, and grind reverse.

That is a real difference, but not the only one. The '78 B210 5-speed is a very heavy, very large transmission compared to the '79 B310 model. The original Datsun 1200 5-speed is lighter and smaller than either of those.

So the only REAL difference is the shift pattern?

I guess if I decide to use it, I will have to pay attention so I dont back into anyone when the light turns green...LOL

Ratios and Strength is same between 60A and 60L box. Dogleg (in NZ at least) was matched to the B310 A14. Std pattern came with the facelift B310 and A15.

Dog leg boxes were originally for race applications as 1st was used only to start the race, but the 4-5 shift was a straight line. A standard 5 speed shift pattern is better on the street due to the traffic and constant 1-2 changes.
Hope this helps.

Help me clarify...A 'Dog-Leg' 5spd has 1st and Reverse inline, correct? I recently aquired a junk '78(?) B210 with a 5spd with 1st and R inline.

Are they worth while gearboxes?

What are the benefits over a standard pattern 5spd?

What are the negatives compared to a std pattern 5spd?
