56A 5 speeds have a different sandwich plate with the oil bung in the bottom (not pointing backwards as per this photo).

EHEHE you`re right, i have to update my profile! I`m from Portugal, and this transmition was on sale here i i thought it was a 5 speed one! Thank you for the "inlightment"...

Looks like a 4 speed to me. The 5 speed is bigger in the bulk of the extension housing at the trans case as both first & reverse are in there.

What, .... I wonder, is that 'thing' hanging off the bellhousing & pointing at the bottom of the picture.

Bandit Blues, are you in the US? [you never bothered to include some location details in your profile. Why so secretive?]
If so, then it's a clutch lever for the left drive model's hydraulic clutch. That would make it a 4 speed as the 5 speed was Japan-only & Japan is a right drive country so the 56A 5 speed would only ever be seen with it's cable clutch arm high on the starter side of the bellhousing.

I could tell you immediately if the photo was of the other side of the box...

I think it's a 4 speed though...
