A good way to identify if your condensor is stuffed is to check the contact sufrace of the breaker points. If it is a light smokey grey then it is all good. If it is a bluish colour then the condensor is crook. Also check that the points are correctly gapped at 18thou or 0.45mm. Also with new points there is a coating on the contact face that requires rubbing off prior to fitment (clipping the points on your T shirt and a quick rub does the trick) and a little bit of high temp grease where the rubbing block runs on the dizzy lobe goes a long way to the longevity of the points. Other than that not much else can go wrong with a dist or coil. It always pays to make sure your dist has 12V going to it. The coil may never have been at fault.

The rubbing block on new points tends to wear very quickly at first & this can really mess with the ignition function, so along with ensuring that you have a new condenser, make sure that you still have the correct point gap.
Once all of this is established, you will need to re-check the timing as it changes with the points wearing.

very well could be. They usualy fry points when their rooted too.

Wouldnt hurt to do a full tune up while your at this stage. New points, capasiter(condencer), plugs etc.
ALWAYS renew your capasiter whenever you do points. Just get a 1200 capasiter from your parts shop, same thing! Or anything that looks like the one you have(wire length etc), their all the same pretty much.

You mean the ballast resistor? (little white ceramic thing on the side of the coil) I though dodgeman said it shouldn't have one? Just ask for a 1200 one, I think they are all the same for datsun models as Im using one from a 1200 in my stanza.
