Can i just replace the analogue unit with a digital unit like yours into a R30 box to work with the speedo?

Yeah mine has a trip meter and odometer. I cant remember how much it cost but it was around the 380-400 mark from a mate at autobarn.

I agree.
I need to find another dash tos uit... i was planning for a cluster out of a 89 180sx... But in the end the fron faacia of the dash needs to be replaced and the only gauge that does work is the big 5" tacho. All the rest i glean from the microtech display unit mounted on the dash...

Is this in a 1200?
Personally, I would just keep the factory guages (get a coupe insert with tacho etc.), get those calibrated and then just get aftermarket oil and fuel pressure and then temps on fluids. Spend the spare $100's on something worthwhile. Fuel pressure is as important as oil pressure, you definitely don't want it leaning out in high revs due to not enough fuel volume and a pressure guage will tell you this. My 2cents.

Did your speedo have an odometer and trip meter in it as well?
I can believe the price though, what did you pay if you dont mind me asking and where did you find them?

I'm not 100% sure on others but I was told no mechanical oil pressure gauge is allowed in the car, because if you have a leak or a line splits in the car you could get nice hot oil all over yourself. I guess the same rule would apply to the other ones like fuel and water. If you can only get the mechanical ones, you can have them setup on the cowl panel like some of the older muscle cars have, just an idea.
I have all Autometer gauges in my car and I searched around buying them when I saw them cheap on ebay and the like, the only two that I bought from a store were the KPH speedo and the in-dash Tacho without shift light, which had to be ordered, and also killed my bank balance

Whats the go with mechanical gauges in the car? I heard that you cant get a car past roadworthy if you have a mechanical type in the car? is this true?
I dont need a control unit like the defis though do i?

there much of a muchness with accuaracy. youll find that you wont have much choice with the types as they are all pretty much set for what there needs are like boost will be mechanical 99% of the time same as temp will be electrical, you would find that the speedo will be electrical aswell. i dont like talking up other websites but try boostcruising for the autogage (not autogauge) brand defi style ones theres a guy named benny in the sponsered section he sells them for about 30 each
