you from sa, I'm from wa

I'm with the others: keep the body stock, and use bolt on parts so you can always to back to the GX "classic" look.

I would restore it stock condition and put shiny paint on it. Here are some factory pictures of GX 1974:

well, first of all i wanne restore the car to its original state if possible...with a few modifications
This is a wise path to follow, but as others have/will say, the body is your first objective. It doesn't matter how good a car is mechanically, if the body is rotted, then the car is junk.

In my view, once you have a body that's worth keeping, then go for the primary safety items first. This means those items that will keep you from coming to grief on the road. You can include
Brakes
Tyres
Steering
Suspension.

As long as the engine runs, then any non critical repairs or upgrades can be defered untill the car is safe to drive & is ready to restore some performance to.

i agree with roconner, gx are very rare in oz but maybe not so rare in sa. so you will find most ozzy datsun nuts will say not to do very many hard modifications to it... if you do do any keep the original parts they are worth a small fortune. if you must upgrade on its power as allwaysallin said the ca18det is the best for australian 1200s, but maybe not for a sa car, as im not sure your rules and regs are the same. there is quite a few sa guys on this forum so maybe talk to them.

and welcome to the forum

If it is a genuine GX you dont want to go choping it up. I would just get it all rebuilt and balanced, electronic ignition, swaybar's reset spring's, coilover's, period wheel's etc..
