Mike-
Many thanks. I pulled out my txmsn and will pull the rear housing off in the nxt day or two. It seems pretty simple and straight forward (famous last words before a botch job, I know )I will post pics in the Wiki FS5W60A Transmission sec -with David's much needed assistance I hope. In the meanwhile, my F4W60A serves me well. -Eric

Bluemax-
Yes if you have a pic or something that can clarify step b. under the Note: in Fig 3 of my initial post. Your time is appreciated. Hmmm...what has my life come to-just me and my Datsun on Christmas Eve.

I stated "off the car" to avoid any confusion for the other components I did not specifically list that have to be removed also.
The manual first lists the transmission case (or bell housing) disassy in this order: 1. Remove release bearing and withdrawal lever 2. Remove reverse lamp, top and O.D. gear switches if equipped 3. Remove speedometer pinion assy 4. Remove nut and stopper pin bolt from rear extension 5. Remove return spring and plunger from rear extension 6. Remove reverse check sleeve assy 7. Remove front cover-Detach o-ring and front cover adjusting shim 8. Remove main bearing snap ring 9. Remove rear extension securing bolts and turn striking rod clockwise 10. Drive out rear extension backwards using a standard puller 11. Separate transmission (bell housing) case from adapter plate Rear Extension dissassy for the Lock pin, striking lever, stopper pin bolt, return spring, striking rod, and striking guide, is provided after the rear extension is removed. Reassy is covered by fig 3 of my first post.

The stopper pin needs to be removed, to disassemble the trans. The shifter then needs to be shifted either left or right (cant remember) to clear the shift rails. then the housing can be seperated.
EDIT: I can check ( i have one disassembled) if need be.

I've never heard of anyone attempting it while it's in the vehicle. What does the manual says about disassembly of the ext. housing?
