this is where the witchcraft comes in. The pipe size before the turbo would have to be determined by the size of the inlet of the turbo. Considering how limited in pipe size your are before the turbo (due to space), I woulnt think that this would be a major concern. Sure, consider it, but its the pipe after the turbo that would have the most enginering.
I would also think that the closer to the head the turbo is, the faster the spool up. The size of the exhaust after the turbo is from what I understand should be big as you can fit in there.

i would have thought that smaller dia pipe (to an extent) would be better for quiker spool up

Considering I know fark all about exhaust systems..... I would think with a turbo system, since the turbo is in the way of the exhaust flow, just bigger is better. The big thing seems to be the length of the dump pipe for excess boost. The further distance down the exhaust this joins in the better since it is a massive sudden rush of super hot gas that disturbs any existing even flows. but thats about all i know. the rest is all black witchcraft to me.

what do you know about turbo manifolds? im thinking of making mine out of 1 1/4 and it is going to be on a hot a14 running a gt30
