Glad to hear you got it fixed. So there was a loose wire inside the fuel tank on the sender itself?

Ok ...I got confused whether it was the sending unit or gauge that was bad.
If you have determined it is the sending unit and you cannot get another one; it may be worth your time to remove and clean it. It could easilly be stuck,or the float may no longer float. My car had sat for about 15 years before I bought it and the sending unit was covered in rust and varnish. Cleaned it off and she works like a champ.

Sunsmith-
What do you mean fuel sensor is gone? Have you removed it and checked the variable resistor?

It is very specific to B210 sedan. Coupe is probably different.

It is not normally repaired, but instead replaced. I have no experience in trying to fix a bad gauge.

If a wire is broken, you may be able to solder it as a repair.
