The early 4 cylinder Torana/Viva front shocks are (i think) perfect for a nice ride in a 1K.Pedders carry them,if thats not firm enough for you you can up grade to the Pedders red.
My experiance has been there OK in pressing of your lower mounting bracket on the old shocks and re fitting them to the new ones...if you dont have a press.

Really , I talked to a guy at pedders and he told me he done a set before and it was a pain in the arse. He told me he needed a bit of time and without him telling me, he made it clear he didnt really want to do them. He hinted that it would cost me so forgot about it. I was going to leave them until the car was ready to drive. That makes me happy that I dnt have to put the old oil shocks back on the front .
Hey dato1000wagon, how is your coupe coming along dude?

None of those meet the request:Quote:
idea as to what shock would be a good (permanent) replacement that would also keep it comfortable?
For comfortable, use the original Nissan specifications. With light car and light suspension, you don't want gas shocks or racing shocks. You want a (new) skinny little light rate shock.

There is no permanent shock. They all wear out after time. There are rebuildable shocks, but chances are 30 years later you won't be able to get the parts...
