updating my progress. engine is ready to be pulled out. just not sure if my dump pipe has to come off butt ill jus pull it off any way and i have to take the tail shaft off and depending weather id be better off removing the gearbox. but i also have to chase up an engine crane

with the dist break or drum brake idea the only downside with it would be that it wont be consistant due to brake fade

if anyone could draw up some diagrams of how it could work that would be great

The cheapest i can think of that would be adjustable would be a hydraulic brake. Using a hydraulic pto pump pumping oil through a gate valve and back to a tank. if you run a load cell off the pto pump you can calculate torque and Hp.

big genset?
are you good with electrics?
simpler way would be a large brake disc or drum with a master cylinder with a screw in plunger to wind up the load
dont forget to make a scattershield to go around it....just in case

what i'm referring to is a auto trans dyno
which was originally built for the tafe's.
they had a holden 202 on the front
(i think the original was a 161) and you
could adapt all soughts of trans to it and load
it to simulate driving. Of course you already
have the engine/trans combo and need the
brake.

i was lookin at some sort of electric motor but unsure how id go about making it work. i want to have the gear box attached as it would probably make it easier to attach something. i no with some ehgine dynos they use a water brake of some discription. my idea was using a propella in a water tank as a load. how ever they use weight and add it on at a certain rpm to find the given tourque and from that can calculate the hp. i have a whole bunch of formula and info from when i was at tafe that i quite usefull i just have to dig it up. im not sure if it is goin to be possible but i would like to create some sort of dyno that i can get some kind or reading as to load im putting onto it

im very keen to get started on this project. i no my biggest issue with my motor not running is the carby but since its not goin to be in the car i have my options as to gettin a different carby on it as room is not an issue. i will most like post up pics of my progress as it will be somewhat interesting

what you need is an electromagnetic
"retarder" or "brake" off a bus or small
truck, they have variable load. And of
coarse you need 3 phase power to run it.
