A decade ago a friend put a Pintara 4 speed auto into a 1200 ute for somebody. they put a 120Y floor in, & I think they used the O/Drive switch to lock up the transmission to get 4th gear. The switch was wired so when it was turned on, the convertor locked up,instead of the usual way where the convertor unlocks. This is because there's not a passageway for the fluid to do the usual lockup. The only problem is the friend who did the work passed away not long after & I never got on with the owner of the car. The only name I knew the owner by was Gadget, he only had 1 arm, which is why he wanted an auto. the builder was Ron Johnson from Ingleburn Steering. So it is possible & I have considered doing a Sunny with a 4 speed auto myself.

the VL commodore auto is the jatco 4 speed. They can be picked up for almost free.
I too did some research into this conversion 6 months ago, but haven't yet got around to actually doing it. The only problems are that the box is a bit longer, and so requires the tailshaft to be shortened and the gearbox mount modified.

Not a bad idea D! i had thought about it a while ago. Apparently the A-series bell housing will bolt straight on to th L4N71 JATCO box but you have to get a custom tourque converter to suit the application. Put the overdrive button on the dash or something and off you go.
What Auto box would you be thinking of using? Commodore? pintara? i heard the late model sunnies came out with the '4-speed' auto box but i don't know how common they are? I have thought about utilising a auto for a 'Drag' box behind a A-series turbo. I wonder how it would go? Load it up in first gear with the brake on, and then launch and change gears. But i don't think you would need th 4 speed for that purpose. It makes me wonder!

Right!! Ive read the wikis and the posts of the past
but it seems no one has done a Jatco 4 speed auto from the early 80s Nissans and other makes of cars. If anyone has done one now its time to own up!!! before I end up putting in a 3 speed in ![]() You can view topic.
