Lets hope global warming doesn't push global temps up to what's needed to safely not run a thermostat eh!!!

Why buy a new one? Just test your to ensure it is still in spec. Mine is 35 years old and still working well.

Or, go to a Nissan parts dealer and ask for Part Number 21200-78502 or alternative. Or get one from a 1991 Nissan Trooper, that's a direct replacement for an A12.

-20 or -30 either one will do.

Yes you can run the engine without a thermostat. But it'll wear out faster.

Unless where you live the ambient outside temperature is close to 100 C, you need a thermostat. Say it is 43C (105F). The engine is not designed to run that cold.

you should run the thermostat as it assists cold start up,

but I dunno how cold it gets in Sri Lanka, might be more beneficial to run thermostat in non tropical climates.

No thermostat might not really be a problem for you.

The tech wiki section here will tell you about heads.
http://datsun1200.com/modules/mediawi ... e=A-series_Cylinder_Heads

To test your thermostat put in in a pan of water on the stove along with a cooking thermometer. Heat it up and check the temperature at which it opens against its rated temperature.

Your head may be warped. Have it checked and milled flat if necessary.
