We have been discussing how they are less strong than the standard gearbox.

Datsun 1000 gearboxx

The smooth one has a different tail casting too there is a rectangular bit on top that the others don't have.

The 1000 & 1200 56s have ribbing all round, while the newer 1200 utes have even more ribbing, and thicker ribbing. This suggests even the regular one was found to be not strong enough (as they strengthened it).

I'm with Bert, all the 1000's had the Shaft to cable setup..
not cable onto the fork..

I can assure you all this is not a B10 box! They all used the cable to a shaft operation to operate clutch actuation.

Having said that,i too have yet to see a "smooth case 56A" box.
Who'd be an early Nissan parts interperator!!!

afaik the 1000 coupe gearboxes dont have 56a on it, even if it is a 56a, maybe some did and some didnt.
one of mine that came out of a 180B / 610 with the clutch lever higher up has 56a on it, even more confusing.

I'm going to throw my 2 cents (sorry 5 cents now) in & say it could be an early 4 speed box from a 1000 coupe. My friend had one years ago & it was definitely a 4 speed shifted through the top of the transmission tunnel. It'd make sense that as the capacity/torque of the engines increased from 1 litre up to 1.2 & beyond, they'd put strengthening ribs on the casting to stop the case twisting. The hole the clutch cable goes through is definitely the earlier 1200 size, not the later 120Y/Sunny size.

Looking at the 'bump' in the tailhousing where reverse gear sits, this appears to be an early box. Also the lower bolt holes in the bellhousing look very small (6mm?) as per the early boxes. What size is the hole where the clutch cable passes through? I've got a stck of various old A series boxes - never seen one like this though. Could it be for an A10? (haven't seen one of those to my knowledge)
