Yes, as DD has stated, Never use a tool to tighten the filter. Only use one to take it off. When installing, you will get more than enough seal with your hands unless you lack any strength, then a quarter turn with the tool will be required. Thin layer of oil on the seal as well.
When removing with the tool, grip as close to the block as possible to avoid crushing the filter.

To prevent this from happening again:
* Put a thin coat of new oil on the new oil filter O-ring
* Tighten only by hand. Newer use a tool to tighten an oil filter. Tighten no more than the instructions (usually 3/4 turn after seal contacts the block). Usually you cannot tighten it this much by hand.

Those oil filter tools should get anything off! The 3 legged ones are the best

i usually get a new oil filter and skewer through the old filter with a flat end screw driver and twist it of(unscrew it) then just dont do the new one up as tight.

Hi budgiedagreat

Actually i learned this from my Father, that time i did not have oil filter removing tool and it was very tight, what he did was took a strong thread and a strong screw driver and surrounded the filter with thread and buckled the screw inside the thread and turned it tightly

no harm to filter at all

thanks
Regards
