They are a wank really. Plus having the great big pulley hanging off you alternator makes it easier to overtighten the belt and and prematurely wear out your alternator bearings.

Yeah people just throw them on cars for the whine, i know of several 5 Litre commonwhores runninng them (they do sound tough, I'll admit) but I don't think they increase power or timing etc.

a mate put a gilmer drive on his 202 once, he just liked the sound coz it sounded like it was supercharged haha

Might be a must have for running a supercharger, look pretty cool too.
Might be wrong but I see no other benefit.

You want perfect timing and rpms for your water pump? These belts do not drive the camshaft or the distributor.
